Mary Lou Hamilton, age 73, of Jackson, KY passed away on Friday, Christmas Day, December 25, 2020, at her residence surrounded by members of her family..-She was born February 18, 1947, at Haddix, KY, and was the daughter of the late Asher and Polly Campbell Spurlock.-She was preceded in death by one daughter: Anissa Louise Caudill. -Six sisters: Sallie Combs, Lillian Stepp, Mae Agee, Marie Rike, Emma Watts, and Judy Combs.-One brother: Robert Eugene Spurlock.-She is survived by her son: Derrick (Ruschelle) Hamilton of Jackson, KY.-Two sisters: Sandy Spitzner of Nicholasville, KY, and Adah (Frank) Arrowood of Huber Heights, OH.-One brother: Johnie Spurlock of Bellevue, KY.-Three grandchildren: Alex Hamilton, Grant Hamilton, Audrynn Hamilton.—- Mary Lou was a graduate of Lees College and Morehead State University. Mrs. Hamilton, as her numerous students through the years called her, was a former teacher, elementary school principal, and a member of the board of education for the Breathitt County School system. She stayed active in various roles in her semi-retired state. She was a Kentucky Teacher Internship Program (KTIP) instructor, mentoring, and evaluating first-year teachers. She would also help administer the national “No Child Left Behind” program in school systems throughout Southeastern Kentucky. In her various positions she held throughout her professional career, she never lost sight of the fact she was a teacher, who loved to see children learn. Even in later years she still missed the comradery of her coworkers.—- Mary Lou attended and was actively involved at the Frist United Methodist Church in Jackson, KY. She was a quiet spiritual person and a devoted follower of our Lord. She enjoyed her church family, Sunday School, and always looked forward to the standing lunch date after Sunday service with whomever from the congregation that would choose to join. She was a member of various civic organizations including the Jackson Women’s Club, the Breathitt County Retired Teachers Association, and the Haddix Cemetery Board of Directors, to name a few. -She unassumingly supported various charities throughout her life. —-Mary Lou was a Sudoku connoisseur and had developed a keen affinity for travel in her retirement. In her spare time, you would likely see her enjoying a meal, or at least a Diet Coke, with friends and family at one of our local restaurants. Of all her pastimes, one of her favorites was attending any number of countless sporting events, recitals, or other activities of her grandchildren, whom she adored. Some of her most memorable times was being in the presence of her sisters with whom she shared a special bond. —- Active pallbearers will be her grandsons, family, and friends. Honorary pallbearers will be her church family and her former coworkers from her years in education. —- Funeral services will be held on Wednesday, December 30, 2020, at 1:00 pm at the First United Methodist Church of Jackson with Danny Speas and Sam Faulkner officiating.-Burial in the Haddix Cemetery, INC at Haddix, KY.—Visitation will begin on Tuesday from 5:00- 9:00 pm at Deaton Funeral Home Chapel.-Deaton Funeral Home in charge of arrangements.—COVID-19 regulations will be observed at the funeral home and church.—-In her memory, consider reading a book to your child for no particular reason, going to some random restaurant with your family and friends, or attending a youth sporting event to the team you support. |
