Share your Memorial with Family & Friends

I grew up in the Smith household. Dad and Phil were best friends. Len and I share the same birthday, though not the same year. Hill and I have been close friends for many years. I spent a lot of time in Morehead with Hill and Jeanne. I used to see Hill a couple times a week but not so much lately. That was my fault not his. I will miss him. Rest easy old friend.

I remember vividly seeing Hill Smith for the first time at the City swimming pool when I was age 7 or 8. Hill and Jimbo Burnett would arm wrestle on the swimming pool picnic tables. Sometimes five or ten swimmers, we would stand around and watch and sometimes the duration may be 5-10 minutes. Seems like they split winning a lot. Both grimaced and then one would start down and the other would push back up. Hill made an impression on me that lasted from then on. I was not close to Hill, but from afar I respected him and the Smith boys. I was just a kid but I dare let them know back then. All the Smith boys were similar but also so different from each other. I grew up around them, mostly at the City pool but not with them due to our age differences. Like their father, they were reserved somewhat but intelligent and quick witted. Ray David and Martin Douthitt commented Hill was an outstanding athlete at City school. Ray David commented Hill was unselfish on the basketball floor. Being from such a prominent family, I suspect Hill didn’t have to be unselfish. You never would see Len or Lester arm wrestling. All Len did was dive off diving board doing flips. Len liked George but not me. Many felt that way! My mom said she always liked Len because he was always so good to George as a kid. I developed a likeness for Len later in life. I remember watching Hill playing music with Walter, Wade , Johnny Lusk and that group. They were good at it. Being a kid, Hill stuck out in my mind. I enjoyed his laugh. I never really knew Lester because Lester was the banker of the three and was working at the bank. Being raised in Jackson back then, all teenagers and even the kids had to develop thick skin at an early age. RIP

Hill was a great friend to me at Lees College. We had conversations about politics, sports, weightlifting, racial diversity, sexism, philosophy, religion, drugs, table tennis, and many other subjects. He was a well versed and interesting. He loved people and even though he sometimes hid his feelings he was a man of much compassion.
